Background

Communal unrest and violence in Myanmar has resulted in Rohingya migration being persistent over the last decades, peaking in the most recent three years when over 100,000 Rohingya left Myanmar in boats. One of their target countries is Malaysia.

In 2016, about 55,000 Rohingya were registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. Rohingya Refugees in Malaysia:

  • Are offered no access to state housing, employment, or health care
  • Are offered no access to government schools
  • Are exposed to discrimination, abuse and arbitrary arrests.
  • Make up the highest level of Adult illiteracy amongst Refugees in Malaysia
  • Make up the highest incidence of “Out Of School Children” amongst Refugees in Malaysia
  • 71 % not attending school with frequent  drop-out amongst those who do!

JREC stands for Persatuan Jaringan Islam Global Masa Depan and is registered with the Malaysian Registry of Societies. Since inception, JREC  has won the trust and confidence of Rohingya communities and UNHCR’s and Malaysian stakeholders support. The enrolment has also grown almost tenfold, from an initial 80 in 2010 to 660 in 2016.

JREC’s Vision is to equip all Rohingya Children in Malaysia with the  essential Knowledge and Skills for their future.

Mision

It is clear that our Mission is for JREC to:

  • Deliver QUALITY PRIMARY EDUCATION to all Refugee Rohingya Children in Malaysia
  • Provide SECURE AND CARING CENTRES where the Rohingya Children and Parents can learn essential life skills
  • Help the Rohingya Children and Parents become increasingly SELF-SUFFICIENT

Our Efforts

Opened 3 schools – A fourth REC is planned for 2018.
Adapted the Malaysian Government’s primary schools’ curriculum
Provided facilities to students that include school transport, daily morning meals, basic health screening and vaccinations
Assisted student placement at secondary level
Increased parents’ participation and involvement in school activities.
Increased involvement of volunteers, institutions, local communities, etc.

Our Schools

REC PENANG

 

JREC established the REC Penang with support from UNHCR in July 2010. It was the first learning centre established in Permatang Pauh, Penang and is now the largest learning centre in the Northern Region.

The vision is to equip Rohingya refugee children living in the mainland area of the Penang state  with essential knowledge and skills for their future. The REC Penang currently serves 339 students and is managed by 16 Malaysian teachers.

Future plan :Vocational Programme.

The vocational education will help older students for employment as they will provided with employable skills.

 

REC KLANG

 

JREC established the REC Klang with seed funding from the Educate A Child (EAC) initiative in July 2012. The vision is to equip Rohingya refugee children living in the Klang area in Selangor with the essential knowledge and skills for their future.

The REC Klang currently serves 193 students and is managed by 11 Malaysian teachers. Future plan : vocational programme. The vocational education will help older students for employment as they will provided with employable skills.

 

REC KUANTAN

 

JREC established the REC Kuantan with the support of Albukhary Foundation in April 2015. The vision is to equip Rohingya refugee children living in the outskirt of Kuantan, the capital of Pahang, with essential knowledge and skills for their future. The REC kuantan currently serves 127 students and is managed by 7 Malaysian teachers.
