A landlocked country in West Africa with over 95% of its population as Muslims, Mali has a long Islamic history dating back to the 9th century. Mali faces numerous health challenges related to poverty, malnutrition, and inadequate hygiene and sanitation. Being among the 25 poorest countries in the world, Mali relies on gold mining and agricultural exports for revenue. The country’s financial status fluctuates with gold and agricultural commodity prices with their harvest of cotton and gold exports making up around 80% of export earnings. Mali remains dependent on foreign aid.

About 69% of Mali’s population lives below the national poverty line with around 15% of children in Mali suffered from acute malnutrition, One household in five faces extreme food shortages in northern regions like Gao, Timbuktu and Kidal with a significant deterioration of household food consumption according to the World Food Programme. This Eid-ul-Adha, make their celebration even more festive by providing them with Qurbani meat. One cow weighs around 220 kg (200 kg after slaughter) and can feed over 84 people.
The International Islamic Youth League is an NGO with over 27 years of experience. They are a humanitarian organisation, providing protection and assistance to refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons in the areas of water and sanitation, education, primary health care delivery services, food aid, agricultural support, orphan support and other community development services assistance in a drive to response to disasters worldwide to alleviate the lives of affected people in both natural and human disasters.
They have arranged Qurbani campaigns throughout Africa for several years and are partnering with GlobalSadaqah this year to raise the funds.
