A landlocked country in West Africa with over 95% of its population as Muslims, Mali has a long Islamic history dating back to the 9th century. Mali faces numerous health challenges related to poverty, malnutrition, and inadequate hygiene and sanitation. Being among the 25 poorest countries in the world, Mali relies on gold mining and agricultural exports for revenue. The country’s financial status fluctuates with gold and agricultural commodity prices with their harvest of cotton and gold exports making up around 80% of export earnings. Mali remains dependent on foreign aid.
